Arrive Chettinad this morning. Relish breakfast onboard then visit the famous Chettinad Mansions and Athnagudi Tile Factory. Also visit one of the Chettinad Heritage Hotels for fun activities including Mundu/Dhoti Draping, Saree Draping, Henna, etc. Afternoon return to the luxury wheels for a luscious lunch. Evening free for leisure enjoy the comforts of the train. Dinner will be served on board as the Maharajas’ Express head towards Mahabalipuram.

Morning take an early breakfast onboard, disembark to visit Mahabalipuram at around 0800 hrs. You will have a 40 mins drive to the monuments, visit the popular structures like Arjuna’s Penance, 5 Rathas and Shore Temple. Lunch will be served at an exclusive venue along with a cultural folk dance performance. Later return to the luxury wheels as the train proceed to Mysore.

The day begins with a lavish breakfast onboard. Later proceed for sightseeing of Mysore. Firstly visit the Mysore Palace or Wodeyar Palace one of the largest palace in South India. The Mysore Palace served as the residence of the royal family of Mysore. You can also stroll around the ceremonial halls, number of courtyards, gardens and other buildings. Savour lunch at the luxurious Lalitha Mahala Palace Hotel, heritage building built for the special stay of the Viceroy of India in the 1920s. The architecture of this building resembles as the St. Paul’s Church in London. Thereafter, you have a choice to visit Shreerangapatnam, the capital of Tipu Sultan else return back to the comforts of Maharajas’ Express. Enjoy luscious dinner onboard as at 2000 hrs the train departs for the next destination Hampi.

Morning enjoy an early breakfast onboard. Further, proceed to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi - a marvellous instance of Dravidian style of Architecture, built by the rulers of Vijayanagar Empire. Popular sites include Ganesha Statue, Virupaksha Temple, Narasimha Statue, Elephant Stables and the Vittala Temple complex, housing the Musical Pillars Temple and the Stone Chariot. Enjoy a ride in the Tuk Tuks and battery operated carts. Afternoon back to the luxury wheels for lunch. Post lunch at around 1545 hours de-board the train for a visit to the Anegudi Village. This village dates back to Neolithic Age. The marvellous village spread over the blissful banks of river Tungabhadra. Interact with the locals and participate in various activities to get the glimpse of village life. Else you can opt for an optional rejuvenating spa session in any of the deluxe hotels in the city. Late evening return back to Maharajas’ Express.

Early morning train chugs to Goa. Enjoy a relaxed morning along with the leisurely breakfast in the beauty of Goa. Till lunch time enjoy the luxuries of the train. Post lunch de-board the train at around 1600 hours for an evening filled with dance and music. Take a stop to visit Goa Chitra Museum – one of the finest private ethnographic museum in the state. The museum consists of a collection of pottery, farming tools, musical instruments, carts and palanquins. Have an evening filled with Goa special Music Carnival followed by dinner at an exclusive venue. Later transfer to the luxury train.

Morning breakfast onboard then proceed for sightseeing. First visit the churches of North Goa – Basilica of Bom Jesus which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where the remains of Saint Francis Xavier were preserved. Later give a visit to Se cathedral just opposite to the Basilica of Bom Jesus. The Se Cathedral was built to mark conquest of Goa by the Portuguese after defeating a Muslim Army. You can stroll around the Old Panjim to get the glimpse of the blend of Portuguese and Goan culture. Afternoon enjoy a lavish lunch at a pre-decided exclusive venue. Thereafter, return to the luxury train to have an enjoyable ‘Indian Evening’ onboard as the Maharajas’ Express proceeds to Mumbai.

In the morning arrive Mumbai, after breakfast disembark the train at around 0815 hours. Bid farewell to Maharajas’ Express train as the journey comes to an end.
The luxury train run on many routes but I chose the one at the time running at South India starting the journey from Trivandrum. We enjoyed being treated as the royalties and the staff was very accommodating and friendly.
The Southern Jewels at Maharaja Express took us to the heartland of South India. It had all the amazing places covered like Mahabalipuram, Mysore, Hampi, Goa, Mumbai, etc. The level of service provided was remarkable. The tours were well organised and varied each day with interesting sightseeing places. Overall a must go experience!
