An Insight into Kerala Tourism

“God’s Own Country” where one can explore, relax & rejuvenate in the calmness of backwaters

Often referred to as "God's Own Country", Kerala is a highly acclaimed tourist destination across the world. It is famous for its exotic land, rich cultural heritage, tropical climate, palm beaches, misty hill stations, wildlife sanctuaries, beautiful art forms, pompous festivals and the calmness of the backwaters which promise a memorable vacation to travellers. There are more than hundred towns dotted in different parts in Kerala; some of the most popular cities that are also tourist attractions are as follows Kochi, Periyar, Munnar, Alleppey, Kovalam, Mararikulam, Kumarakom, Thrissur, Varkala, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Idukki, Poovar, and Guruvayur.

Tourists must go to Alappuzha and Kollam for backwaters, boat races, mountain ranges and wildlife sanctuaries, Munnar for its hill stations and iconic resorts, Periyar for its national parks and wildlife sanctuaries and Wayanad for spice and coffee plantations. Besides these, some of the places that hold significance in the history of Kerala are Anjuthengu Fort, Bekal Fort, and Hill Palace Museum. Anjuthengu fort was commissioned by the British East India Company during the 17th century. It is a historically relevant structure since it was operated as the first major trading station of the East India Company in India. It was also operated as the first signalling station for ships coming to Kerala. Anjuthengu is located at a short distance of approximately 35 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Bekal fort is located in the Kasaragod district in the backdrop of the serene Arabian seashore. The fort complex includes a water-tank with a stairway, a mosque and an enchanting Hanuman temple at the entrance. The magnificent view of neighbouring areas when looked at from the fort makes it a unique fort when contrasted with other forts in Kerala. Hill Palace Museum is the largest museum in Kerala and exhibits painting, carvings and epigraphic samples that were the erstwhile belongings of the royal family of Kochi. There are beautiful antique pieces of art on display that fascinate everyone who pays a visit to this museum.

Apart from the scenic beauty that Kerala offers to its tourists, the scope of adventure tourism in the state makes it one of the best destinations in India for adrenaline junkies. Owing to the varied topography of the state, one can explore their options from various adventurous activities: paragliding, hiking, trekking, biking as well as water sports such as kayaking, fishing, canoeing, bamboo rafting, and scuba diving. Travellers are at the liberty to customise their independent itineraries as per their tastes and preferences. Destinations such as Kovalam, Alleppey, and Kumarakom with their serene beaches and backwaters are perfect for the water babies. On the other hand, Munnar, Wayanad, and Vagamon with their lush landscapes and adventure activities like trekking, hiking, and mountain climbing are perfect for those who love the mountains.

The flora and fauna of Kerala are reinforced by the topography: rich soil, heavy rainfall and a damp climate. An array of these factors has ensured diversity in the flora in Kerala. The forest cover in Kerala is largely spread across the Western Ghats. The Western Ghats have been listed as one of the 18 hotspots of bio-diversity internationally and are considered to be a melting pot of endemic, rare as well as endangered flora and fauna. Forest trees can be segregated into timber trees and flower trees. The most important trees in this category are teak, ebony and rosewood. Bauhinia and Hibiscus are amongst the most important flowering trees. Jack Fruit Tree and mango tree are commonly found trees that exist in almost all regions in Kerala.

Apart from the flora, Kerala has a diverse range of fauna as well. The forests have a staggering number of elephants, black leopards, tigers, squirrels, bears and deer. There are delightful specimens of bird life as well; such as the tiny honey-sucker with its glorious metallic colours, the golden-backed woodpecker, the little white-eyed tit and the Malabar whistling thrush known as the 'Drunken Plough Boy' because of its musical exertions.

Kerala has two national parks, twelve wild life sanctuaries and one biosphere which falls in the category of protected areas in Kerala.

The religious places in Kerala are Sabarimala, Guruvayur, Sri Padmanabhaswamy. Sabarimala is temple of great religious importance that receives an annual footfall of approximately 30 million devotees. The temple was built to exemplify secular values and is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. There is a mosque constructed nearby in memory of Lord Ayappa’s friend, and it is compulsory to visit the mosque before entering the temple to offer your prayers. Guruvayur is considered as the third largest home of Lord Krishna in India. It was designed by the genius architect, Vishwakarma such that the first rays of the sun fall directly on the feet of Lord Krishna on the first day of the Malayalam New Year. The centre of attraction is the idol of Krishna which is erected and wears a holy Basil garland. Sri Padmanabhaswamy is known as one of Kerala’s most famous temples and is revered worldwide for its architectural magnificence. It is located in Thiruvananthapuram and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Dravidian style of architecture has been employed in its construction. The two major festivals are celebrated in the temple that results in a large number of tourists being attracted from all across the world.

Kerala displays a true secular festive spirit. A number of fairs and festivals take place in the state each year, and are celebrated with much enthusiasm. A few of the most famous fairs and festivals are Onam, Vishu, Thrissur Pooram, Aranmula snake boat race and Nehru Trophy Boat Race.

The cuisine in Kerala revolves around spices, aromas and textures. It is spicy and offers a variety of options for both vegetarians as well as non-vegetarians. Meat-based dishes are spicier compared to vegetarian dishes that are milder on the tongue. Food is served traditionally on a clean green banana leaf and is meant to be eaten with one's fingers. Coconuts grow in abundance in Kerala and hence, coconut shells, grated coconut shavings and coconut milk are used in dishes for thickening and flavouring. Boiled rice is the staple dish of Kerala and is consumed with gravies and other curried accompaniments.

Shopping in Kerala is a delightful experience since the land is traditionally rich in handicrafts. The artisans in Kerala are skilled and craft a wide variety of objects that find their liking among tourists, especially foreigners. Because of the abundance of forests and coconut groves in Kerala, wood, jute, coir and coconut shells are popular handicrafts. There are a number of souvenirs, curios and trinkets made out of teak, deep-wine rosewood and fragrant sandalwood that will be difficult to resist. Kerala is also known as the land of spices that are used in medicines, preservatives and perfumes. They act as exquisite shopping products and enjoy international acclaim. Non-the-less, when in Kerela do not miss those therapeutic Ayurvedic massages and therapies for a relaxed note to your holiday.

Kerala receives rainfall on approximately 140 days in a year. Hence, it has a wet and tropical climate that is influenced by seasonal heavy rains of the southwest summer monsoon and northeast winter monsoon. Almost 90% people of Kerala speak Malayalam. There are 5 main regional dialects of Malayalam. The other common language spoken in Kerala is English. Reaching Kerala is easy as all the major air carriers fly to and from the state. You can also reach Kerala via rail or road.
