Ooty also known by names of Udagamandalam & Ootacamund, is a very famous hill town destination in South India, perched atop the Nilgiri mountain range in Tamil Nadu state. Its name, Udhagamandalam, is derived from aboriginal term "Othakal-mund" meaning house in mountains. "Water Abode" is another meaning of Udhaka Mandalam in Sanskrit. Nicknamed ‘Snooty Ooty’, by Britishers, this place was established by them in early 19th century and Ooty was once the erstwhile summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency.
