An Insight into Kanchipuram Tourism

City Of Thousand Temples & Golden Silk Woven Into 9 Yard Magic

Famous for the beautiful 'Kanchipuram Sarees' Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu state is a very popular tourist destination. Kanchipuram is an important spiritual center and a prime pilgrim destination of Hinduism. The city is dotted with temples of the medieval era that demonstrate spectacular architecture and intricate workmanship.

Once the capital of Pallava Kingdom (4th - 10th Century), this place was a center of spiritual learning for almost all religions such as Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism etc., which prevailed in South India, then. The Hindu temples of that era are still present and are revered shrines with regular observation of rituals and visit of devotees. Relics of Jain temples and complexes have been found here but unfortunately, there are no remains of the Buddhist presence. Although, Kanchipuram was a prime Buddhist Learning Center of the past and Chinese Buddhist monks visited the place for spread of knowledge, no remains or relics are present for sightseeing.

In present day, Kanchipuram is a major weaving hub and the artisans hold exemplary weaving skills to convert silk yarns into magical sarees and fabric lengths.

Kanchipuram, also known as Kanchi, attracts global tourists who are interested to explore South India’s grandiosity in architecture, craftsmanship and heritage. When you are here, in this culture hub, do visit Kanchi Kamakshi Temple, Vaikunta Perumal Temple, Varadaraja Perumal Temple, Kailasanathar Temple, Kanchi Kudil - the ancient culture and sculptural heritage museum, Kachapeshwarar Temple, Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Sri Sankara Matam shrine, International Library - a treasure of ancient manuscripts, Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Temple, and the Ekambeshwarar Temple. Once you are done with your sightseeing, indulge in some Kanchi Mutt holds kutcheris or South Indian classical music concerts, which are generally conducted in the evenings.
