Tibet’s ‘Happy Land’ that is also favoured as the stop for varied trucks sprawling all across the town, Saga is a beautiful city. It is the last town situated on the Yarlung Tsangpo River’s banks and is also serving as a resting spot for varied tourists who are on their way to Mt. Kailash. There is nothing much in the town to visit and thus, it is treated more as an overnight stop rather than a tourists’ historical destination. Saga is located in the northwest Shigatse Prefecture of southern Tibet. Known as “happy land”, it is an army town with a Chinese garrison patrolling the Tibetan Nepalese border. It is located at the intersecting roads of Lhartse in the east, the Dzongka in the south and the Purang and Drongpa \roads in the west. It also straddles the Dargye Tsangpo River with the Brahmaputra River. It is the last stop-off town with supplies, restaurants and guest houses for the pilgrims travelling to Mount Kailash.
The various highlights of this place are the Yarlung Zangbo River - the first great river in Tibet which looks like a silver dragon; Dajia Lake - located about half way between Lake Peiku and Zhari Namco; Nugong Monastery - located in the southeast of Saga, it is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery of Nyingma sect; Tuquing Monastery - is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery of Gelug sect; Buzha Monastry - a Tibetan BuddhistMonastery of Gelug sect; Kuyu Monastery - a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery of Kagyu sect; and Dajiling Monastery - a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery of Gelug sect and one of the sub-temples of the Jokhang Monastery in Lhasa.
Saga is endowed with beautiful natural scenery and landscapes. Covered by Mount Kailash in the northwest and Himalaya Mountain Range in the south, there are around tens of small lakes in this area and six hot springs. The most famous hot spring is the bowl shaped Rujao with healing attributes.
Many important and grand festivals in Saga center on spring and summer. Tibetan New Year Festival or Losar Festival is the most significant festival here. Bathing Festival or Gamariji (in Tibetan meaning Venus) is a mass bathing festival. Ongkor festival, an ancient festival in farming areas is celebrated when all crops are waiting for harvest.
