The title of the most sacred, acclaimed and beautiful lake of Tibet goes to Lake Manasarovar with its pristine blue waters, sandy edge and the gigantic snow-capped mountains in the background. It is a fresh water lake in the Kailash Glaciers near Mount Kailash in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It is located in the Burang County which is 20 kms southeast of the Mount Kailash. Lake Manasoravar is a welcoming place for the travelers worldwide and provides both spiritual and aesthetic beauty for the eyes to behold. This lake is aptly named as “The Jewel of Tibet”.This lake holds a great importance in history and mythology. It is said that it was the first lake that was created in the mind of Lord Brahma.
In the northwestern shore of the lake, is the pictorial Chiu village, home to Chiu Monastery where most visitors base themselves. Travelers and pilgrims love to drive around the lake, take a dip in the sacred water and walk the four day kora path around the lake.
The lake is relatively round in shape and is connected to Lake Rakshastal and is also near the source of Sutlej, Brahmaputra, Indus and the Ghaghara rivers. Lake Manasarovar is a place of pilgrimage which attracts pilgrims all over the world.
This lake has a very important significance in Hinduism, Bon, Buddhism and Jainism religions. It is said that Buddha stayed and meditated near this lake many times. It is believed that bathing in this river erases all sins and drives away the troubled thoughts and brings many fortunes for the pilgrims. Ji wu temple is in the western bank of the lake. Ji wu village and Gurla Mandhata (also known as goddess peak) are the places that can be visited. Chu temple, Korjak Monastery ( Buddhist Monastery of the Sakya order with a blood red compound), Mount Kailash, the holy mountain, Nepal Building and Darchula Bazaar (commercial trade port), Seralung Monastery, Trugo Monastery, Chiu Hot Springs are some of the other attractions near the lake.
The festival of Lake Manasarovar is celebrated during the the holy Kailash Manasarovar Yatra duration where pilgrims come to take a dip in the ceremonial waters and travel around the lake.
