An Insight into Everest Base Camp Tourism

An Expedition of Lifetime !

Mount Everest, also known as Jomolhangma in Tibetan meaning Female Incarnated Giant Mountain, is the highest mountain in the world. It is situated at the border of Nepal and Tibetan plateau and provides a pictorial view with various snow capped mountains along its ranges. The Everest base Camp trek is famous as not only it allows everyone to visit the world’s highest mountain but also travelling to the base camp is thrilling by itself. Many trekkers attempt to follow the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. And many are successful too with their expedition and this has become one of the top destinations for trekkers. Everest Base Camp is the point from where the mountaineering expedition takes off. There are two base camps – the south base camp of Nepal and the north base camp of Tibet. The south base camp is popularly known as the Everest Base Camp.

One of the starting points of the Everest Base Camp journey is Lukla which is the most frequented one and the other one is Jiri. The trekkers start from Lukla in the south and then head towards north to Namche Bazaar where it further makes its way to Pheriche/Dingboche. Then the trip towards right continues to Gorak Shep through Lobuche. Slightly towards the east is the Everest Base Camp and towards the west is the view point of Kala Patthar.

Other than having the solo satisfaction to be on the top of the world by climbing Everest, other additional benefits include meandering through some lovely villages, visiting gompas/monasteries like Thami and Tengboche and catching an occasional smile of the friendly Sherpa people of the Solu Khumbu region. Challenging hikes to Kala Pattar and Nangkartshang Peak can also be done. Mostly the trek is through the Khumbu Valley and the Sagarmatha (Nepali name for Everest) National Park which is a World HeriTAGe Site and is home to snow leopard, musk deer, black bear, Himalayan tahr etc. Simultaneously the highest peaks of the world – Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu and Cho Oyu are the added bonus for the travelers. The travelers can also visit a school by Sir Edmund Hillry in Khumjung.

The overwhelming white peak that touches the sky is regarded as the mecca for the valiant trekkers. The Everest Base Camp trek is the most demanded trekking adventure. Everest is not just a mountain and the journey to its base camp is not just a trekking experience. It is the journey of a lifetime wherein the trekkers will come to terms with their most daring side. The difficult path, the altitude sickness and the physical and mental strain may be a damper for the expedition. Nonetheless, the invigorating mix of scenic beauty, interesting culture and a personal sense of achievement mixed with the warm hospitality of the locals makes Everest Base Camp one of the world’s most desirable journey and destination.
