Interestingly, Hoogli city is the capital of the Hooghly district and lies on the bank of Hooghly River! Around 50 km from Kolkata, Hooghly is in West Bengal state of India. River Hooghly, is the Ganga River, as is called here, is the lifeline and also predominated the landscape of this place; to such an extent that people make use of ferries and boats to communicate between different towns.

Hooghly is popular for its deep rooted history and heritage. The district is dotted with several small but important towns & villages that are a testimony to the rule of multiple foreign power in the past like rule of British and Portuguese at Hooghly, the French at Chandannagar, the Germans and Austrians at Bhadreswar and that of the Dutch at Chinsurah. It was 1537, the Portuguese first settled here, but in 1632 Shah Jahan were defeated them. Then followed the British, who set up a factory here in 1651. Chandannagar was once a French colony and one can still find traces of French language and culture here. Chinsurah was ruled by the Dutch from 1656 to 1825 and later in 1825 the Dutch exchanged it with British for the British-held Indonesian island of Sumatra.
