Initially, Darjeeling was a group of villages administered periodically by Nepal and Sikkim. The place grew in prominence towards mid of 19th century when, the Brit established a hill station there and later identified the area to be perfect for tea plantations. In 1849, the British took over the region and Darjeeling was in British India. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site at present, started way back in 1881 and the town became the accepted summer capital of India when the Brit governed from Calcutta.
