Thoothukudi, known as Tuticorin by British, is a port city in the state of Tamil Nadu. This commercial sea-port caters to the needs of the inland cities of South India and is one of the sea entryways of Tamil Nadu. Thoothukudi is also known as "Pearl City" as pearl fishing is carried out extensively in this town. Interestingly, there are 21 islands between Thoothukudi and Rameshwaram shores in the Gulf of Mannar and these are the first Marine Biosphere Reserve of India. Rich in life, this Biosphere has around 36,000 species of flora and fauna.

Thoothukudi or Tuticorin port is one of the oldest & an important seaport in India, with a history that dates back to 6th century AD. The city has been of prime importance in the past and was ruled by different dynasties in different times. Starting from early Pandyas, medieval time Cholas & later Cholas, later Pandyas, Ma'bar Sultanate, then by Vijayanagar Empire, Madurai Nayaks, Chanda Sahib, Carnatic kingdom, Portuguese, Dutch and then the British, all rules this place.

Besides all these, two Maha Utsavams namely, Aavanipperunthirunaal and Maasipperunthirunaal. All these festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and attracts huge number tourists from far & near.
