Kanyakumari, India's southern tip, is a coastal town in the state of Tamil Nadu. This place was called Cape Comorin by the British and is very popular for spectacular sunrise and sunset views over the ocean. Kanyakimari, as a name comes from the Devi Kanya Kumari Temple here. Fringed by the Laccadive Sea on three sides, Kanyakumari town is the southern tip of the popular Cardamom Hills, which is an extension of the Western Ghats. This place has been a popular tourist destination ever since known owing to it location. In present day Kanyakumari is a popular destination in the South India Tourist Circuit, as the last point of Indian Sub-continent.
Tourists are attracted here to see the offshore Vivekananda Rock Memorial that is perched on a tiny island that has a structure dedicated to Swami Vivekananda. There is another island nearby, which has the colossal Thiruvalluvar Statue. This statue was built to honor the prominent Tamil poet, philosopher and author of "Thirukkural".
The statue has elephants and other beautiful designs on its base. The Tsunami Monument is also worth seeing here. This monument is made to honour the victims of Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004). The Gandhi Mandapam, whose design & architecture was influenced by the Sun Temple in Odisha, is a popular sightseeing point. It is the spot where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were kept in an urn before being immersed in the ocean.
