Yuksom, said to be the first capital of Sikkim, is a small, calm and peaceful village, which is necessarily a perfect get-away for the one who want to avoid the touristy crowd in towns & cities of West Sikkim and relax in wilderness. Yuksom means “the meeting place of the three learned monks” in local language and there were three monks who came from Tibet to this place. They selected Phuntsog Namgyal as the 1st King of Sikkim and he was conferred with the title of Chogyal, meaning “Righteous King”. Located near the Kanchenjunga National Park, Yuksom is tucked in lap of nature with lush green mountains surrounding it. This place is popular as a pit-stop before reaching the base camp of Mount Kanchenjunga. Dotted with a number of interesting tourist attractions Yuksam is also a great place to try local cuisines. This village nurtures high historical importance as the first Chogyal was crowned here in 1642. Different religious and historical places like the Dubdi and Sangachoeling monasteries here in Yuksam, attract tourists. The splendid Khecheopalri Lake considered is another tourist attraction.

Yuksom is a historical town in West Sikkim and was the first capital of Sikkim in 1642 AD by Phuntsog Namgyal, the first Chogyal of Sikkim. The Chogyals ruled for 333 years and there are a number of relics of the past that narrate tales of this dynasty, here. The coronation site "Throne of Norbugang", the place is dotted with several monasteries and a lake.

Yuksom is a very beautiful place, surrounded by forested mountain peaks. On a clear day, the snow-covered tip of Kanchenjunga is visible from here. The place has a number of sightseeing places that attract tourists here. They include Kathok Lake - soul lake of Lama Kathok Kuntu Zangpo, Lama who introduced Buddhism to this land.; Norbugang Coronation Throne, the place where the first Chogyal of Sikkim was crowned.; Kathok Wosel Ling Gompa - a small Buddhist temple and monastery and a lake with a big Padmasambhava figure.; and the Dubdi Monastery - the oldest monastery in Sikkim.

This zone is popular for different trekking trails of which Goechala Trek and Tashiding Trek are very popular. This serene village nestled in the west Sikkim is a delight for trekkers and also for holidayers willing to relax amidst nature.
