Puri, in Odisha, one of the most popular Indian pilgrimage town is the home of the famous Lord Jagannath and is also a major tourist destination in eastern India with beautiful beach and coastal sights. It is the most sacred city, one of the Char Dham in Hindu religion. With is long standing history of 3rd century BC, Puri along with Konark and Bhubaneswar form the Golden Triangle of Orissa. Puri, the holy land of Lord Jagannath, is known by numerous vernacular & ancient names like Shrikhetra, Purushamandama-grama, Purushottama Puri, Srikshetra, Purusottama Dhāma, Purusottama Kshetra, Neelaachala, Neelachalakshetra, Purusottama Puri and Jagannath Puri. According to the chronicle and as per temple's historical records king Indradyumna started the temple construction in 1136 AD and completed towards end of 12th century.

Anangabhima III of Eastern Ganga dynasty dedicated his kingdom to Lord Jagannath, and the heirs of the Gajapati dynasty till date perform the ritualistic duties of the temple, even though princely states do not exist today. Interestingly, the history of this city Puri is related to that of the Jagannath Temple. The city was invaded 18 times, that too every invader had the intension to plunder the wealth of the Jagannath temple. Most of the times the priests had taken the idols to safe places and destruction of the temple was prevented by resistance or surrender of the regional kings.

The soul of Puri is the JagannathTemple and the heart is the golden sand beach. Tourist here can also visit other places like Pancha Tirtha, Gundicha Temple, Swargadwar, Beach, District museum, Raghunandana library. The festivals here in Puri attract tourist from all over the world. The prime being the Chariot Festival of Puri i.e., the Rath Yatra attracts millions of people here. This is the only time when a non-hindu can get to see the Lord, as he comes out of the temple to meet his devotees. Other colorful festivals here are Chandan Yatra, Snana Purnima, Suna Besha, Samudra Arati, Sahi Jatta and many more. Once can also plan day trips to nearby places such as Satapada, Ramchandi, Konark, and Chandrabhaga.
