It is believed that the name Panchamarhi is derived from the Hindi words Panch – meaning 5 and Marhi - meaning caves. It is those five caves, believed to be built by the five Pandava brothers of Mahabharatha, gave this place its identity. The caves are perched on a hilltop and provide an excellent sightseeing option. Pachmarhi was discovered by Captain James Forsyth of the British Army. Accompanied by Subhedar Major Nathoo Ramji Powar, Captain James Forsyth was leading his troops to Jhansi in 1857, while they came across this virgin hill. The location seemed ideal for a hill town and the place quickly developed. The place was chosen as the summer capital for the Central Provinces.

The Cave Shelters like Dhuandhar, Bharat Neer, Jambu Dwip, Harper's Cave that have cave paintings, pottery shards and microliths and ancient remains.
