Kanha National Park is one of the most beautiful and effectively managed national parks of India, situated in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. It is a popular place amongst tourists, wildlife enthusiast, and nature & wild life photographers. The park is around 160 km from Jabalpur, and extends over an area of 1,940 Sq. km and tis also includes the Tiger Reserve. 940 Sq. Km of the total area is designated as the core area and the rest is buffer zone. The park was created in 1955 and the department has worked dedicatedly in maintaining the best forest zone for wild life inhabitants. The Surpan River flows through the park’s central grassland areas that blanket this extensive plateau.
Kanha National Park is the home to rare Hard Ground Barasingha and tourist & wild life enthusiasts come here in large numbers to see the Barasingha (Swamp Deer) and the majestic big cat Tiger. This park has served as a survival zone for many endangered species and this has also made Kanha National Park the most scenic and beautiful wildlife reserve. The park is segregated into 4 Zones namely, Kanha, Kisli, Sarai and Mukki. No doubt all the zones are at par as bio-diversity areas but tigers in Kanha and Kisli zones are more easily sighted.
The alluring & picturesque landscape makes this place a delight and attracts global tourists. The animals sighted here include tiger, leopard, bison, gaur, sambhar, chital, barasingha, barking deer, black deer, black buck, chousingha, nilgai, mouse deer, sloth bear, jackal fox, porcupine, hyena, jungle cat, python, pea fowl, hare, monkey and mongoose. The birds seen here frequently are storks, teals, pintails, pond herons, egrets, peacock, pea fowl, jungle fowl, spur fowl, partridges, quails, ring doves, spotted parakeets, green pigeons, cuckoos, papihas, bee-eater, hoopoes, drongos, warblers, kingfishers, woodpeckers, owls, and fly catchers.
Apart from the national park, other nearby places that attract tourists includes the Kawardha Palace, which is now a resort built in the period of 1936-39 by the king Dharamraj Singh; Mandawa mahal, Krishna Temple, Madan manjari Mahal, Bhoremdeo Temple and more. Bamni Dadar - the sunset point is also picturesque & popular. Kanha National Park also has souvenir shops for shop keep-sake shopping.
