Madhya Pradesh is a land of diversity. The state has monuments and structures that hold an important place in mythology. One can visit Khajuraho for world’s oldest pre-historic paintings and erotic sculptures. If you are a wildlife lover, a visit to Orccha and Mandu is a must. You will also see abandoned ruins in these areas. Pilgrims must visit Omkareshwar and Maheshwar temples. Other places to see are Sanchi for stupas, Pachmarhi for picturesque beauty and Bhopal, which is the capital city of Madhya Pradesh for beautiful lakes.

The Bhimbetka rock shelters were declared as UNESCO world heritage site in 2003. The place has an impressive collection of paintings and artefacts. Of the 760 rock shelters in caves, 500 have beautiful paintings dating back to 3,000 years. Sanchi Stupa is one of the popular Buddhist shrines known for art and architecture. The heritage site was built in the era of emperor Ashoka in 3rd century B.C. The Stupa is surrounded by toranas that represent peace, trust and love. Gwalior Fort is an architectural marvel of 8th century built on a hilltop near Gwalior. The fort has a defensive structure and comprises of temples and water tanks. The Man Singh Palace inside the fort is popular for its extraordinary design. Jahaz Mahal is a brilliant example of craftsmanship. It was built around 1436-1439 by craftsmen from Delhi. The Mahal stands on a narrow strip of land in middle of two lakes, which make the spectators feel that the structure is floating. Located in a small historical town in Chanderi, the Chanderi fort was built in Mughal era. It has three gates and the first gate is named as Khooni Darwaza as criminals were thrown from the battlements and their bodies crashed at the gate.

Madhya Pradesh has several significant religious places that are visited by thousands of believers every year. Kandariya Mahadev temple is the most beautiful of all the Khajuraho group of temples. It was built in 1050 BC by Raja Dhandadeva, a Chandela ruler. The temple has ornate carvings and sculptures. The main spire in the temple is the depiction of Mount Kailash, and is 31 meters high. There are 646 statues in the boundary of the temple. Ram Ghat is famous for Kumbhmela that is held in every 12 years. It is the most ancient bathing ghat with respect to celebrations during Kumbh. Pilgrims and tourists visit the ghat throughout the year. The Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain is built on the banks of Rudra Sagar lake. It is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Mahakaleshwar temple is considered to be one of the ten tantra temples in the country and it is the only temple where Bhasm-Arti ritual is performed. Narmada Udgam in Amarkantak is where the river Narmada descends with the permission of Lord Shiva. It is considered as the birth place of the river. Narmada is believed to be originated from body of Shiva. Lakshmana temple is a stone temple in Khajuraho dedicated to lord Vishnu. It is one of the earliest stone temples in the country, and was built in 10th century AD.

Besides temples and heritage sites, Madhya Pradesh is a hub for adventure activities. One can take a cable car ride over the marble rocks in Bhedaghat. Orchha is an ideal place for river rafting. Panchmari has rock climbing spots, and Upper Lake is perfect for boating. If you want to camp amidst the wild, head to Delawadi. The satpura trek in Pipariya is popular among trekkers. Nature walks are held at Amarkantak. Wildlife enthusiasts can check out Kanha National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Pench National Park and Panna National Park.

Several fairs and festivals of Hindu, Sikhs, Muslims and other communities are held throughout the year in Madhya Pradesh. The tribal festivals celebrated in Baster and Jhabua are famous for cock fighting, drinking bouts, festivities and dancing. Other than these, some of the cultural and significant festivals in Madhya Pradesh are Pachmarhi Utsav, Navratri, Khajuraho Dance Festival, Malwa Utsav, Tansen Music Festival, Maha Shivratri Festival, Bhavbhuti Samaroh

Madhya Pradesh is not just an amalgamation of cultural and natural diversities, it has different types of cuisines also. The mouthwatering dishes will have a flavor of the cuisine of the bordering states. The food differs from region to region. While the cuisine in Bhopal includes biryani, meat, keema, kebabs, fish and korma, the delicacies in Indore and Gwalior are prepared from milk. Some of the popular dishes are Kusli, Indori puri, lavang lata, pilaf and bhutte ki kees.

Since Madhya Pradesh is a fusion of traditional and cosmopolitan culture, it is a shopper’s paradise. From traditional handicrafts made by skilled craftsmen to exclusive designer stuff, you will find everything in this state. Some of the must-buy items are - Chanderi and Maheshwari saris, lacquer ware, handwoven carpets, jewelry, dolls and wall-hangings.

Madhya Pradesh has ten national parks with Bandhavgarh National Park, Van Vihar National Park, Satpura National Park, Panna National Park and Satpura National Park being the proinent ones. Other than these, there are a few native reserves invluding Ken Gharial, Bagh Caves and Chambal. Kanha, Satpura, Panna and Bandhavgarh Parks are managed as project tiger areas. Teak and sal forests are major forest formations in the state. There is a variety in distribution of bamboo-bering areas.

Like other parts of North India, Madhya Pradesh has subtropical climate with hot and dry summer between April-June, monsoon between July-September and dry winter between October-March. Travelers can visit the state any time of the year, but the best time to visit is October-March as climate remains cool.

Hindi is the official language of Madhya Pradesh and a substantial number of population also speaks Marathi. Several dialects of Hindi are spoken in different regions. The common dialects are Bundeli, Bagheli, Malvi and Nimadi. A majority of locals aren’t fluent in English, but guides can speak and understand the language.
