Pangong Lake, also called Pangong Tso in local dialect meaning the "high grassland lake", is one of the most mesmerizing lakes in the Himalayas. Pangong is said to have come from the Tibetan word Banggong, which means “an enchanted, long and narrow lake”. Situated near Leh, at a height of about 4,350 meters above mean sea level, this endorheic lake is 134 km long extending from India to China. One third of the Pangong Lake is in India while the remaining lies in China controlled Tibet. Owing to its altitude, the temperature here is generally between -5°C to 10°C and the lake freezes completely in winters despite of the fact that the water is saline.
This fascinating lake is about five hours drive from Leh and the drive is an experience in itself. The route passes through the beautiful countrysides of Ladakh and over Chang La pass, which is one of world’s highest motorable road.
As you reach Pangong Tso, the very first glimpse of that serene, bright blue water with Trans-Himalayan Mountains on the backdrop and a rocky lake shore stretched into the lake, stays etched forever in your memory. The hypnotic beauty of this lake double up as it changes its color during the day. As vivid as possible, this lake displays multiple colours varying from azure to shades of blue to green and even grey at times!. The panoramic view of this place gained more popularity after being a 'hot-spot' for many Bollywood movies. The resplendent beauty, the crystal water and distinguished terrain surroundings make Pangong Lake are an exceptional example difficult to find landscape.
The briny water of the lake does not support aquatic life but the lake is a home to many migrating birds. One can sight numerous ducks & gulls "surfing". This gleaming lake and its clear waters is enough to leave wanting to come back again.
