Pangong Lake, also called Pangong Tso in local dialect meaning the "high grassland lake", is one of the most mesmerizing lakes in the Himalayas. Pangong is said to have come from the Tibetan word Banggong, which means “an enchanted, long and narrow lake”. Situated near Leh, at a height of about 4,350 meters above mean sea level, this endorheic lake is 134 km long extending from India to China. One third of the Pangong Lake is in India while the remaining lies in China controlled Tibet. Owing to its altitude, the temperature here is generally between -5°C to 10°C and the lake freezes completely in winters despite of the fact that the water is saline.
This fascinating lake is about five hours drive from Leh and the drive is an experience in itself. The route passes through the beautiful countrysides of Ladakh and over Chang La pass, which is one of world’s highest motorable road.
