The Land Where Vasco Da Gama Dropped his Anchor
Largest city of Northern Kerala's, Kozhikode also known as Calicut. Once the capital of Zamorin dynasty, British made Calicut a part of the Madras-province. Frequented by traders from Arabia and Europe, Calicut was a prosperous trading town ever since history sites. The English word calico, meaning a cotton textile, originated from the name of Calicut. Once a romantic town with the old-world charm, Kozhikode presently is a developed city all modern amenities, malls, high-tech cafes. Nevertheless, the purity of its heritage still attracts tourists and holidayers from far and near. Kozhikode / Calicut was the capital of Malabar of the Sri Samoothiri Maharajas and later the zone was taken over by the British rule.
