Largest city of Northern Kerala's, Kozhikode also known as Calicut. Once the capital of Zamorin dynasty, British made Calicut a part of the Madras-province. Frequented by traders from Arabia and Europe, Calicut was a prosperous trading town ever since history sites. The English word calico, meaning a cotton textile, originated from the name of Calicut. The first ever recorded European encounter of the city was with Vasco da Gama in May 1498 was he was received by then King Sri Samoothiri Maharaja. Kozhikode / Calicut was the capital of Malabar of the Sri Samoothiri Maharajas and later the zone was taken over by the British rule.
