Kovalam in Kerala state, is famous all over the world for its pristine beaches. Westerners flock into this place as the sea has low tidal waves and shallow waters, making it enjoyable. Though known to less but Kovalam is one of the oldest tourist hub in India, dating way back to 1930s and ever since then it has been a popular destination in beach holiday circuit. Kovalam essentially means “grove of coconut trees” and this little town justifies this to the fullest. Fringed with palms & coconut trees, Kovalam is a beautiful destination to relax & unwind.
It was towards the end of 1920, when Kovalam received attention for the first time. It was Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore, who got her beach resort, Halcyon Castle, constructed here. Thereafter, it was Kovalam to the public eye and the new story of this place was woven. The European guests of the Travancore kingdom, who visited the place then in 1930s, unveiled the potential of Kovalam beach and how wonderful it can be as a beach destination. Nevertheless, Kovalam gained popularity in the early 1970s, when a masses of hippies, part of the Hippie Trail, travelled here on their way to Ceylon. This migration transformed Kovalam to an important tourist destinations for beach holidays in India, from a casual fishing village of Kerala.
Kovalam has three crescent shaped beaches namely, Lighthouse Beach, Hawah Beach and the Samudra Beach. These beaches are the star attractions here. As the name says, Light House Beach has a 35 meter high lighthouse that towers over the nearby Kurumkal hillock. The lighthouse, being one of the oldest lighthouses of Kerala, was used for guiding ships to the nearby Vizhnjam port. One can visit the lighthouse between 3 pm. to 5 pm every day. This is the largest of all three beaches here. The beach is developed and touristy. Maximum of foreign tourists prefer to stay here. The next larger beach is the Hawah Beach, which was named so for the topless European women who used to flock there, way back in those days when such attire was a taboo in India. The third beach or the northern most one is the Samudra Beach. This rustic beach doesn't have tourists, rather the local fishermen ply their trade here.
Activities that keep tourist engaged here include Surfing, Wooden Boat Ride at Kovalam's main beach, Snorkeling, Sunset cruises, Motor Boat Ride etc. This place is no less than Goa, rather more laid back, more relaxed and more enjoyable.
The peace and serenity of the place is best enjoyed with some Kerala ayurvedic treatments, massages and yoga courses. When here in Kovalam, enjoy the locale, the food, the beaches, and the serenity and unwind yourself with a soul-quenching beach holiday.
