Nagarhole Tour & Travel Guide

Scenic Lakes, Dense Forest & Flourishing Wildlife… a celebrated Wildlife Destination

The 37th “Project Tiger” Tiger reserve of India and a part of the sprawling Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Nagarhole National Park of Karnataka is a rich wildlife zone. Scenic lakes & water bodies, dense forest and flourishing wildlife makes this a sought-after wild life destination and a getaway from Bangalore. Situated on the edgeways of river Kabini, Nagarhole National Park forms a part of the protected region that also includes Bandipur National Park, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary (Tamil Nadu) and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Kerala), all together forming the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. This Western Ghats Nilgiri Sub-Cluster is under consideration by the UNESCO to be selected as a World Heritage Site.

Nagarhole National Park is said to be named after Nagarhole - the Cobra River in the local Kannada language, which means a twisting & turning river that runs through the center of this park. Nagarhole is also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park and is one of India's prime Tiger Reserves. The park has plentiful forest area, valleys, hills, water streams and waterfalls that enhance the natural beauty of this place and primarily contribute to create and maintain healthy prey-predator ratio. The park is situated in two districts of Karnataka, namely Mysore and Kodagu and is one of the last and the best protected habitats for endangered Elephants and Tigers.

Lesser known to tourists, Nagarhole National Park is also birdwatcher’s paradise. One can see more than 250 species of birds here and birds are commonly found near the Kabini River and artificial lakes and mud puddles. White backed vulture, red headed vulture, Nilgiri wood pigeon, oriental white ibis, greater spotted eagle, blue winged parakeet, Malabar grey hornbill and many other types of birds are seen here. Birds like painted bush quail, yellow-legged green pigeon, ashy perinea, Indian peafowl, Indian robin, and others are sighted in the dry regions here. The park is also a breeding ground for reptiles and one can see muggers, Indian rock python, common vine snake, Indian monitor lizard, common wolf snake, bamboo pit viper etc. And the best way to explore all these and more is via the different available safaris.

Jeep safari and Elephant safari are best for spotting large herbivores and predators like leopard, elephant, tiger and more. If you want to spot aquatic wildlife like water birds, crocodile and others then Boat safari on river Kabini will be an exciting option. One can also enjoy a lazy Coracle ride. Coracle are typical round boats, local to the zone, best suitable for drifting slowly with river’s flow.

October to May months are the best suitable time to visit Nagarhole National Park, as maximum spotting of animals and birds is possible during the period. Preferably, avoid trip to these national parks during monsoon as parks might be closed for visitors during heavy rains.
