A tiny hill town, Kangra was the capital of the bygone Chand dynasty. Nestled in the picturesque Kangra valley in the western part of the state of Himachal Pradesh and at the foothills of the lofty Dhauladhar range, Kangra is known for ancient temples and distinctively captivating surroundings. The place is around 18 kilometers from Dharamsala and has easy access roads. The weather here is alpine with pleasant to mild cold summers and chilling winters.
Kangra town has been plundered many times in past because of the wealth within the Vajreshwari temple. The wealth here attracted Mahmud of Ghazni in AD 1009, who looted a huge treasure of gold and silver jewelry from this temple. Then it was the Tughlaq rulers who plundered the temple in 1360. However, this temple regained some loss and it was paved with plates of pure silver during Mughal emperor Jahangir reign in the early 17th century.
The Vajreshwari Devi (Kangra Devi) temple makes the place popular. In fact the original temple was destroyed in a terrible earthquake, and a new one was re-built in the same place. There are many other places of tourist interest in and around Kangra. The ancient fort of Nagar Kot, number of temples near Kangra, Masrur’s intricately carved temples, and Jawalamukhi temple are a few to name. A huge number of devotees visit these temples during festivals like Navratri, Dussehara and other festival, to pay their homage to Goddess Durga.
This beautiful hill station perched atop in the Dhauladhar range offers spectacular scenic views and makes an ideal place to relax and unwind. A holiday here is best experienced in the company of local people who are warm and hospitable.
