A tiny hamlet in Himachal Pradesh Chail is bountifully blessed with natural beauty and is around 3.5 hour drive from Chandigarh, making it a perfect getaway. History of Chail begins from its neighbor Shimla. It all started with the banishment of Maharaja Adhiraj Bhupinder Singh of Patiala from his once “Summer Capital – Shimla” towards the later part of 19th century, by Brit. Anguished and sored at this insult, Maharaja Adhiraj Bhupinder Singh of Patiala explored the hills & mountains that bordered Shimla. He looked only for a hill, which was visible from Shimla and notably higher from Shimla. Fringed by deodar forest, this hamlet Chail seemed perfect as Shimla was directly visible from there and more importantly Chail’s altitude was above the British reserved Shimla. By the end of 1891, a luxurious & expansive mansion stood at Chail to serve as Maharaja Adhiraj Bhupinder Singh of Patiala’s summer place. The palace was at 2226 meter above mean see level, which was a good hundred meters above Shimla’s average height. On contrary, the other side of this story says, the land for this summer retreat was allotted to Maharaja of Patiala by the British, for his assistance in the Anglo-Nepalese conflict.
