An Insight into Chail Tourism

An Escape Tugged In Deodar Woods…

A tiny hamlet in Himachal Pradesh Chail is bountifully blessed with natural beauty and is around 3.5 hour drive from Chandigarh, making it a perfect getaway. History of Chail begins from its neighbor Shimla. It all started with the banishment of Maharaja Adhiraj Bhupinder Singh of Patiala from his once “Summer Capital – Shimla” towards the later part of 19th century, by Brit. Anguished and sored at this insult, Maharaja Adhiraj Bhupinder Singh of Patiala explored the hills & mountains that bordered Shimla. He looked only for a hill, which was visible from Shimla and notably higher from Shimla. Fringed by deodar forest, this hamlet Chail seemed perfect as Shimla was directly visible from there and more importantly Chail’s altitude was above the British reserved Shimla. By the end of 1891, a luxurious & expansive mansion stood at Chail to serve as Maharaja Adhiraj Bhupinder Singh of Patiala’s summer place. The palace was at 2226 meter above mean see level, which was a good hundred meters above Shimla’s average height. On contrary, the other side of this story says, the land for this summer retreat was allotted to Maharaja of Patiala by the British, for his assistance in the Anglo-Nepalese conflict.

Chail is a place to unwind, relax and rejuvenate yourself. The sightseeing enthusiasts loved to see the Chail Palace. This bygone era remain is well maintained and converted to a resort by the government, presently. Its architecture and the relics of the past are intriguing and any history lover’s delight. The cricket ground and a polo ground, which were a part of the Maharaja’s summer retreat are at an altitude of 2,250 meters above sea level. It is one of the highest cricket ground in the world. Apart from the palace, Chail Sanctuary is a must visit for nature lovers. The distinct variety of flora & fauna has amused visitors every time. Sighting sambar, goral and cheer pheasants are common. Even, barking deer and peacocks can be spotted at dusk and dawn. Kali Tibba has a stunning Hindu temple and is also frequented for its breathtaking views of the surrounding valley & lofty mountains. Another revered temple is the Sidh Baba ka Mandir. This temple has simple architecture & beautiful views to enjoy the trip. Apart from these, Mohan Shakti National Heritage Park, Mohan Park, Snow Trails Camp, Mohan Shakti Temple, Junga Fort, Nanaksar Baba Nand Singh Tap Sadana, and Mount Karol sightseeing point, far and near to Chail.
