Losar Buddhist New Year Festival Tour from Tibet

The main countries celebrating Losar—the Tibetan New Year—are India, Nepal, Tibet, Sikkim, and Bhutan. The holiday is observed according to the lunisolar Tibetan calendar which is usually February or March according to the Georgian calendar. The festival existed before Buddhism was observed as a way of giving gratitude to the Gods. Originally a holiday primarily observed by farmers, Losar evolved into a Buddhist festival that marks the start of the New Year.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 Arrival at Lhasa Airport

Upon your arrival at Lhasa Airport, you will be greeted and transported to your hotel. Following lunch, you will explore Nrophuk Link Park, also known as the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama. Take a walk amidst the stunning natural surroundings of Lhasa before returning to your hotel. Enjoy dinner and stay the night at the hotel. The following day we will start our Losar-Tibet Buddhist New Year festival tour.

  • Day 2 Sightseeing tour of Sera monastery & Nechung Monastery

Explore Sera Monastery, Nechung Monastery and Chaqi Monastery in the morning on the second day of the Buddhist New Year festival tour. Afterwards, make your way to the Potala Palace, which serves as the summer residence of His Highness the Dalai Lama in Lhasa.

Take some time to visit other famous attractions in Lhasa, such as the Jokhang Temple and Ramoche Temple. Once you're finished with your sightseeing, return to your hotel for dinner and a comfortable night's stay.

  • Day 3 Lhasa, then a sightseeing tour to Tibetan New Year, then to Losar

At dawn, prepare yourself to enjoy the festivities of the Losar Festival - the Tibetan New Year's Day (Losar).

The Tibetan Calendar originated in 1027 A.D. and designated the first day of the initial month as New Year's Day. This celebration is of great significance in Tibet. As per the Tibetan tradition, nearly all individuals gather at Jorkhang Temple to offer prayers for a joyful and prosperous start to the year.

Later in the day, take a trip to Drepung Monastery. Drepung Monastery, which once served as home to 10,000 monks, may allow us to quietly enter a dimly lit hall to witness the lyrical and resounding recital of the sutras. Alternatively, we may sit beneath a willow tree and observe the monks engaging in lively debates. Hence concluding the Losar-Tibet Buddhist New Year festival tour for the day.

  • Day 4 Lhasa, then sightseeing tour of Drak Yerpa Cave

Explore Drak Yerpa Cave during your trip to Lhasa and return to the city afterwards. Drak Yerpa is a collection of over 80 meditation caves perched on a hillside, renowned as Lhasa's “life tree” or spiritual centre.

This location has a rich spiritual history, visited by renowned figures such as Songsten Gampo, Padmasambhava, Yeshe Tsoygel, Padampa Sanggye, and Asisha. Hundreds of monks, nuns, and hermits once inhabited it.

Drak Yerpa hermitage is one of the most sacred cave retreats in the Ü region for those with a keen interest in Tibetan Buddhism. Many ascetics have sought refuge here and contributed to the site’s great spiritual significance. The area is incredibly serene and offers breathtaking vistas.

  • Day 5 Lhasa to Samding, then sightseeing tour to Yamdrok Lake, Lhamo La-to Lake, & Mansarovar Lake

On the fifth day of the Losar-Tibet Buddhist New Year festival tour, travel from Lhasa to Samding and then back to Lhasa. The Tibetan people regard lakes, much like mountains, as sacred. Yamdrok Lake is one of four revered lakes alongside Namtso, Manasarovar Lake, and Lhamo La-Tso.

This lake is considered to be a charm and is believed to be a fundamental aspect of the Tibetan people's life force. The lake comprises nine islands, with one of them being home to the renowned Samding Monastery. This monastery is unique because it is the only Tibetan monastery guided by a female reincarnation. While it is not a nunnery, the female abbot leads a group of around thirty monks. Afterwards, head back to the hotel for dinner and a night's rest.

  • Day-6 Departure from Lhasa

Following breakfast, set off to Lhasa Airport to continue your journey with unforgetful memories of Tibetan customs and the Losar Festival.
