Paro, a picturesque valley town in Bhutan, is a historic town that boats of many sacred sites and historical buildings dotted throughout the place. The valley is on the confluence of River Paro Chhu and River Wang Chhu at Chuzom and extends up north to Mt. Jomolhari, near Tibetan border. This picture perfect area is one of the widest valleys in Bhutan and is rich & fertile rice growing zone with crystal clear river meandering down the valley. This town is dotted with more than 155 temples & monasteries, which date back to 14th Century. Bhutan’s only international airport is located here, connecting the region with global destinations. Access to the region, and proximity to the historical & religious sites and sightseeing points has led to the development of many luxurious resorts and great staying options here, making Paro one of the most preferred destination in Bhutan for tourists.

North of Paro is the famous Taktsang Palphug monastery, also known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, which clings to cliffs just above the lush green Paro Valley. This monastery is also the unofficial symbol of Bhutan, mostly found on all tourist brochures and propagation materials. Perched on the edge of a cliff, 1,200 meter high, just above the forests of rhododendrons, this monastery has an impressive sight and allures tourists in Bhutan.

The relics of a defensive fortress, Drukgyel Dzong of the 17th century is at a short distance, northwest from this place. Nearby the Paro town there is another imposing fortress, Rinpung Dzong, which can be reached by walking a bridge across the Paro Chhu River. The National Museum of Bhutan is a must see place at Paro, which has armor, traditional clothing, jewelry and Buddhist paintings on display. The Ugyen Pelri Palace, a royal residence, exemplifies Bhutanese architecture and is a site worth visiting.

Other touristy places here in Paro include The 3-story Dungtse Lhakhang, Chele La Pass, Ta Dzong, ancient watchtower, Drakhapo monastic complex, Kichu Lhakang, and Jangsarbu Lhakhang Statue of Sakyamuni Buddha

Enhancing the natural beauty of mesmerizing Paro Valley are its elegantly made, traditional- design houses, shops and other building that dot the valley. Paro is also said to be the best place in Bhutan to explore on foot. Tourist form a triangle tour including Jakar and Punakha, along with Paro. This serene town is vibrant in its culture and Paro Tshechu is a religious festival celebrated around Feb-Mar every year. So when planning a holiday here, make sure to tour the country during the festivities are on. When here in Paro do not miss buying a set of Kiras (Bhutanese traditional dress for Women) and some memorable souvenirs from the souvenir shops dotted all around the pace.
